Ein verwirrendes Potenzial
Photographs by Julia Steinigeweg
Love is all there is,
It makes the world go round,
Love and only love, it can´t be denied.
No matter what you think about it,
You won´t be able to do without it,
Take a tip from one who´s tried.
- Bob Dylan / I Threw it All Away -
Everyone needs love, sex, affection, the feeling of not being alone, at least not always. No one is constantly strong, you want, you need a shoulder to lean or to have a good cry on, somebody to dedicate yourself to. And there is also a need to give love - caress, comfort, satisfy.
But many are alone. Unendurable alone. And looking for a way out of this hell. Some are no longer seeking for it in bars and nightclubs or dating portals. They live with dolls. Men have women. Women have men. Women also have babies. Made of Silicon.
Julia Steinigeweg has photographed the dolls and the men and women who belong to them. No documentary images and none about a fetish. These are pictures about the enormous dimension of loneliness and the desperate attempt to overcome it. Somehow.
Just 21 images, but what kind of, in a radically designed book. Cover, embossed title, end papers, headband, blank pages - all black.
A CONFUSING POTENTIAL. Indeed.
